This one-page teacher note introduces neurons, the principal cells in the central nervous system, describing the function and giving the name of each of a neuron's component parts.

Students will make bead neurons and use them as models to understand the specialized cellular structure and function of neurons and how neurons communicate with each other.

Students model the migration of neuronal axons to find their targets.

Students view slides of brain tissue under a microscope then describe and identify structures.
